The late Pope was found guilty, stripped of his vestments, and thrown into the Tiber River. To this day, it is still a mystery as to why Pope Formosus was arrested and put on trial for murder.

In the year 1681, a French nobleman, Philippe de Beaumont, was sentenced to death for the alleged crime of witchcraft. The story goes that Philippe de Beaumont managed to survive his internment, although it was said that he was left in a state of semi-consciousness due to being deprived of air. After a few days in the tomb, Philippe was found by two of his servants and freed. Although it's impossible to know exactly how long he was buried, historians estimate that he must have been trapped in the tomb for at least four days.

Although the details of this incredible story are murky, it serves as a reminder of just how cruel and unusual punishments could be in times gone by. While Philippe de Beaumont may have miraculously survived his ordeal, other unfortunate souls weren't so lucky. As well as being buried alive, people have also been known to be sealed in underground chambers or left in cells where they eventually suffocated to death.

One of the strangest and most shocking events in world history is that of a woman who was eaten alive by cannibals. In 1520, Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes arrived in what is now Mexico with a group of soldiers. While in the area, they encountered a tribe known as the Nahuas. One day, a Nahuas warrior took a liking to one of the Spanish women, Doña Marina. He kidnapped her and brought her to his tribe where she was to be consumed by the tribe as part of their customs.

Doña Marina was tied up and placed in a large cooking pot filled with boiling water and left to cook alive. Just as the cannibals were about to consume her, Cortes and his troops arrived and rescued her from the pot. Doña Marina survived this horrific ordeal and she eventually became an important ally of Cortes’.

The story of Doña Marina’s near-death experience at the hands of the Nahuas is a chilling reminder of how dangerous and unpredictable life can be in certain parts of the world. It is also a stark reminder of the importance of learning to adapt and embrace new cultures and customs to survive in the world today.
