The World's 10 Best Films: A Top 10 List
What are the best films of all time? That's a tough question, and there's no single answer that satisfies everybody. Some might think it's a bunch of Hollywood action films, while others might prefer international films from countries like France or Japan. But what about animation? Or documentaries? Or B-movies? What about horror films? With so many types of films out there, how can you possibly know which ones are the best of all time? We've done some research and come up with our own top 10 list of the best films in the world today.
1) Citizen Kane
Citizen Kane is a 1941 American mystery drama film by Orson Welles, loosely based on William Hearst's life and starring Welles, who also wrote and produced it. It co-stars Dorothy Comingore as Susan Alexander Sandy and Everett Sloane as Citizen Kane. The story begins with a newsreel reporter seeking to solve the mystery surrounding Charles Foster Kane; he dies before revealing it, but clues are given.
2) Vertigo
Alfred Hitchcock’s 1958 classic, Vertigo, tells a strange tale of a detective who is hired to trail a woman and ultimately falls in love with her. The movie stars James Stewart as Scottie Ferguson and Kim Novak as Madeleine Elster.
3) 2001: A Space Odyssey

4) The Godfather
The 1972 American crime drama film The Godfather, directed by Francis Ford Coppola and produced by Albert S. Ruddy, follows Don Vito Corleone, a Mafia boss who runs his criminal empire during the 1940s and 1950s. It stars Marlon Brando and Al Pacino as Don Vito Corleone and Michael Corleone, respectively. The story spans ten years from 1945 to 1955.
5) Casablanca
When it comes to movie magic, there are few films as beloved as Casablanca. Released in 1942, Casablanca stars Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman and is one of those rare films that are beloved by both critics and audiences alike. When it was first released, tickets were in such high demand that theatres implemented ticket lotteries to make sure everyone got a fair shot at seeing it.
6) Raging Bull
Released in 1980, Raging Bull is directed by Martin Scorsese. It stars Robert De Niro as Jake LaMotta and tells his life story, which happens to also include a career in professional boxing. Many critics hail it as one of Martin Scorsese’s best films and one of the greatest sports movies of all time.
7) Star Wars Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back
With a screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan and George Lucas, Star Wars (released as Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back in Europe) follows Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Princess Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher) as they attempt to rescue Chewbacca from Jabba The Hutt. They succeed with help from Lando Calrissian, and an attack on their space station by Darth Vader is thwarted.
8) Sunset Boulevard
Sunset Boulevard is a 1950 film noir directed by Billy Wilder, starring William Holden and Gloria Swanson. The movie tells of a struggling screenwriter Joe Gillis (Holden) who is hired by an ageing silent film star Norma Desmond (Swanson) to be her ghostwriter. He ends up being pulled into her disastrous life.
9) Psycho
Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 thriller Psycho is often cited as one of cinema’s finest moments, and for good reason. Exploring themes of motherly love gone awry and male objectification, shows that even master filmmakers are not above crafting a classic horror story. With legendary performances by Anthony Perkins and Janet Leigh, Psycho is a must-see film in any list of best movies ever made.
10) Rear Window
The film was shot in New York City and has a screenplay by John Michael Hayes, who adapted it from Cornell Woolrich's 1942 short story It Had to Be Murder. It was directed by Alfred Hitchcock and stars James Stewart, Grace Kelly, Wendell Corey, Thelma Ritter and Raymond Burr. The movie is considered by many film buffs to be one of Hitchcock's best and one of Stewart's finest performances. Jimmy Stewart plays wheelchair-bound photographer L. B.
